Presidentís FY 2012 Budget Request Released

Even though Congress has not completed work on the federal budget for the current fiscal year (FY 2011), the President today released his Budget Request for FY 2012. We have obtained the budgetary information for the National Institute of Food and Agriculture and compiled the table that follows.

As you can see, the Presidentís Budget is another reflection of the difficult budgetary climate that we face. It proposes a $138.420 million cut to the NIFA topline number compared to FY 2010. Three of the systemís core capacity programs would be cut by 5 percent ó Hatch, McIntire-Stennis, Smith-Lever 3(b)-(c). The most notable bright spot, in an otherwise austere budget picture, is the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) which would receive a 23.7% increase compared to
FY 2010.

We are still analyzing the Presidentís Budget Request and will call to your attention any significant matters that merit your attention. We are also working on a response to the DRACONIAN reductions to the systemís priorities that are contained within the House CR (www.land-grant.org/reports/2011/02-11.htm) and you should anticipate a BAC Call to Action on this matter later today.
