FY 2014 Appropriations Update Ė Presidentís Budget Released

The Presidentís FY 2014 Budget Request was made public this morning. Under the budget, total funding for the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) would increase from $1.143 billion to $1.288 billion. The Presidentís Budget proposes numerous changes to NIFA programs (including several funding line consolidations). A complete NIFA table is at the end of this Call to Action.

As you can see from the attached summary document, the BACís priority requests for FY 2014 are now fully harmonized with the Presidentís Budget Request. Under both our position and that taken by the President, the 7.61% reductions to the systemís core capacity programs would be restored and there would be a $106.396 million increase to AFRI (the Food and Agriculture Research Initiative).

House / Senate Deadlines

The House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee has extended the deadline for Members of the House of Representatives to submit programmatic funding requests for the FY 2014 appropriations cycle until COB on Wednesday, April 17. Thus, we need you to continue to contact your representatives asking them to support the systemís FY 2014 NIFA requests.

The Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee has set its deadline for Senators to submit programmatic requests to the subcommittee. The deadline is 4:00 pm on Friday, April 26.
